Serverless Redis, vector search, and messaging that scale to zero.

WHAT THEY’RE BUILDING

Upstash is a serverless data platform offering Redis, a vector database, and QStash messaging, all billed per request with true scale-to-zero pricing, so developers avoid paying for idle infrastructure while they build.

THE FOUNDING TEAM

Upstash was founded in 2020 by Enes Akar and Mehmet Doğan. Enes was previously a co-founder of Hazelcast, the open-source in-memory computing platform, where he later served as VP of Engineering and CTO of Hazelcast Cloud before joining Confluent. Mehmet brought deep distributed systems and software architecture experience, having worked with Enes for years at Hazelcast as Chief Software Architect and Distinguished Engineer before becoming CTO & Software Architect at Upstash. Bilal Yaşar later joined the team as an early key engineering leader.

WHY WE BACKED THEM

Upstash was an early bet on the serverless and edge infrastructure shift. Managed databases still made developers manage instances, capacity, and idle cost, while modern apps needed global low latency, elastic usage, and simple APIs. Upstash built a consumption-based serverless data platform, starting with Redis and expanding into Vector, QStash, and Workflow. As AI agents and edge-native apps drive more bursty, distributed workloads, that wedge has become even more relevant. Early traction, from roughly 12,000 developers at seed to 85,000 within two years, made the pull from developers obvious.
